The Contentment Reading Challenge

Posted by Katie Garvin at 6:55 AM
It's that time of year again--where bookworms find reading challenges to set for the new year. I think for 2012 I will only be doing one challenge and, coincidentally, I'm hosting it! ;-)

Contentment Reading Challenge 2012
Hosted by Legacy of a Writer

What is the Contentment Reading Challenge? Well, it's based on the idea that we, as avid readers, have many books scattered around our homes--on shelves, in the closet, under the bed, etc.--that we hope to read again "some day", but have not made the time to do so. Or maybe you are continually purchasing new books and never take the time to be content with the ones that are currently on your bookshelf.

If you want to take the time to read those books that you have enjoyed in the past year or two and are sitting there staring at you from your bookshelf, then I encourage you to join in this reading challenge with me! This is the Contentment Reading Challenge's second year (last year it was begun and hosted by Amber at Seasons of Humility), and Legacy of a Writer is excited to be taking over the reins for this challenge in 2012.

This challenge is a more of a personal challenge, so don't feel like you have to strictly follow all of the rules in order to be involved. What really counts is our heart attitudes--to learn to be content and revisit the books we have read in the past. And while this isn't an overnight change, it's something we can be working on together.

How to participate? Good question! Below are the rules...

-  Anyone can join.

- How to join? If you have a blog, post about your decision to join in the Contentment Reading Challenge for 2012 and then leave a comment below saying you want to join. Oh, and be sure to include the link to your post in the comment!

- If you have a blog, grab the Contentment Reading Challenge button and put it in your sidebar.

- This IS a challenge, so there has to be some goals/levels to set. There's no pressure--just choose whatever level you think would be good for you to try and accomplish in this coming year.

            * Floating: Skimming the surface, you re-read 5 books you already own.
            * Wading: Getting your feet wet, you re-read 10 books you already own.
            * Swimming: Immersing yourself again, you re-read 15 books you already own.
            * Diving: Going deep into the stories you love, you re-read 20 or more books that you already own.

- This challenge officially starts on January 1st, 2012 and officially ends on December 21st, 2012. I will be posting on and off throughout the year about the challenge (hopefully, every month), and I would love to hear how you are doing on reaching your goal in the challenge. So be looking! I still am not sure what all I will do, but I'm sure there will be some fun activities along the way (like bookswaps, for sure! ;-) and maybe even a celebration at the end of the year, so I hope you can join me!

- A verse for us to remember during the challenge... "Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee nor forsake thee." (Hebrews 13:5)

And last, but not least...
- I will be keeping this page updated frequently with the posts I do throughout the year. So be sure to check back here to see if you might've missed any posts updating my progress or hosting a fun activity.

Disclaimer: This challenge originally came from Amber's blog, Seasons of Humility, who hosted it last year. The Contentment Reading Challenge is not designed to discourage people from supporting Christian authors by buying their books. The purpose in this challenge is just to foster an overall attitude of contentment and to remind each other of the wonderful books we already have to be thankful for. In no way will anyone be disqualified for buying new books or reading review copies to promote new books.

For my challenge this coming year, I will be taking the Swimming challenge. :-) I plan to read less and write more during 2012, and since I had a time reaching 20 reread books this year...yeah, I thought I'd aim a little low and more reasonably for this next year. :-)

I will be joining this challenge:) I read so many new books that sometimes it is nice to go back and read some of the older ones I enjoyed. Thanks for giving out the challenge! Will post back here once I put it on my blog. Probably not until Wed. or Thursday.

Sounds like fun! As soon as I get my act together from my trip, I'll be joining in. :)

Eve said...

I'd love to join in! I think I'll wade... swimming just won't be possible once I get my hands on a kindle!
I'll post about it on my blog, probably tomorrow. ;)

By the way, that Witemeyer book in the challenge button photo, is it To Win Her Heart?

I loved taking part in Amber's challenge and excited to see it go another year.

Last year I did DIVING and reread 20 books (or rather this year), but I'm scaling back a bit this year and going with WADING. I wonder which ones they will be. :D

Thanks Katie!!

I added the button and will get my post done up tonight.

Eve, the book is Tailor-Made Bride by Witemeyer. Very good books! Love her series:)

Melanie - Thanks for signing up!

Amber - I was more than happy to continue the CRC on Legacy of a Writer!

Crystal - Got your post, so glad you'll be joining in for 2012!

Charity - Yeah, I know what you mean. I look forward to diving back into the books I enjoyed this year! Glad you're joining us!

Katie McCurdy said...

Sheri - Awesome! Yeah, take your time---2012 isn't here yet. :-)

Eve - Haha, I know what you mean! There are just SO many books at your fingertips with the kindle! Glad your joining in, though!

Oh, and, yes, Charity was correct. The Karen Witemeyer book in my stack is A Tailor-Made Bride. VERY good! :-)

Casey - Great! Yeah, this year I *think* I will hit my goal of rereading 20 books...but it'll be close. So, with that in mind, I pulled back a bit as well! ;-)

Charity - Thanks! I'll try to stop by and check out the post! :-)

I joined the challenge and added the challenge button to my sidebar.
Here's my post.

Katie McCurdy said...

Megan - Awesome! Welcome to the challenge. :-)

Brooke said...

Hey Katie - Question about the challenge. Is this for re-reading or reading books you already own (but perhaps haven't read yet) or both? Hope you had a great Christmas!

Katie McCurdy said...

Brooke - Hey! This is for books you have read in the past -- doesn't matter how long ago. So, no, books you've had on in your TBR pile for a while wouldn't count...but those you've read this past year would. That make sense?

Any other questions, just ask! :-)

I'm going to join! I'm DIVING into this challenge. Yes, I'm reading 20 or more books I own.

Katie McCurdy said...

Sarah - Welcome aboard, Sarah! Yay, you go, girl! I am currently reading my 20th reread book for 2011. It was a close call for me, but I made it! :-D Here's hoping you make it, too!

I have a norwegian blog and will be writing in norwegian, but I still want to join. I have at least 10 books that I want to re-read in 2012. :)

Katie McCurdy said...

Tones Bokside - Hey! That's no problem! You are still welcome to join in and participate in this years Contentment Reading Challenge! Thanks for jumping into the challenge! :-)

Hello Katie

I ♥ this challenge. I want to jump in and DIVE this year. I will be combining this challenge with read 52 books in 52 weeks.

Will you be hosting a monthly blog linky party for us to link to ?

Blessings from Australia

Katie McCurdy said...

Chareen - Yay, okay! Glad your diving into the challenge, and joining us from all the way in Australia. What fun!!

I'm not sure about the linky. That's a neat idea, though! If I am not able to have a linky, you can just post the link to your progress in the comments.

See ya then!

Christina B said...

I'd like to join the challenge-it looks like a fun way to re-read some of my favorite stories and get to discuss them with others. :)

I'll probably just wade, because I don't want to commit to more than I can handle time wise.

I'll put up the info on my blog tomorrow and post the link back here then!

New follower...
I love to read but rarely take the time to do so anymore BUT I'll take this challenge as a WADER with the hopes of diving in head first and upgrade to a SWIMMER ;)

I'll be back when my post about this challenge goes live...then I'll leave you a link.

Katie McCurdy said...

Christina - Welcome aboard, glad that you're "wading" with us. I look forward to seeing your link. Oh, and I just posted the first CRC post for 2012 on Wednesday(25th), if you missed it.

Cindy - Awesome! Thanks for joining the challenge. Smart not to get in over your head, but I hope you make it all the way to being a Swimmer. I look forward to hearing about your progress over the year. :-)

Hey Katie,

Here's the link to my blog post.

I look forward to being part of the challenge! :)

Christina - Awesome! Welcome aboard!!

Hi Katie

Finally started in on my challenge :) How do we link up with our posts to show we are progressing on our challenges ? Will you be blog posting your way through the challenge yourself maybe once a month ?

Katie McCurdy said...

Chareen - Wonderful! No worries about being late--just jump on and have fun. Which book have you picked for your first reread this year??

I won't have a link up, but each month (towards the end of the month) I will post an update on the challenge, and in the comments section you can leave the link to your own update on your progress.

If you have any other questions, just let me know! :-)

Thank you for hosting this!

I know I am a bit late but I have been participating unofficially. I am considering joining in completely, but my main problem is are the books. I seriously do not own that many. Most things I read come from my church library. So far, I have read books I own, but I will be coming to the end soon enough. Would books borrowed but not own count? Or is it a rule that they must be yours?

Is it to late for me to sign up?

Here's my link

Katie McCurdy said...

4readin - Yay, so glad you've jumped in with us! Sure, borrowed books that you get to reread count! :-)

Kenzie - Nope, not too late at all! So glad you're joining the fun! And thanks for the link, too!
